Week 1 — Arrival and Medical

Can I start work immediately upon arrival in Bahrain or must I wait for the medical exam?
Your LMRA work permit should be active before you arrive (the employer obtains it). However, the mandatory medical examination must be completed after arrival and the fitness result transmitted to LMRA before your permit is fully regularised. In practice, many employers permit work to begin immediately, but the permit is not fully compliant until the medical fitness is confirmed. Confirm your employer’s policy and ensure you attend the medical appointment within the booked timeframe.
How soon can I open a bank account after arriving in Bahrain?
You need the CPR card first, which typically takes 3–14 days depending on medical exam completion and NPRA processing speed. Once you have the CPR card and a valid residence permit, bank account opening at major Bahraini banks is usually completed within one working day, subject to the bank’s individual KYC checks. Some banks require the employer’s official letter on company letterhead.
What does the LMRA Wage Protection System mean for me as a worker?
The WPS requires your employer to pay your salary through LMRA-registered bank channels by the specified pay date each month. If your employer fails to pay on time, LMRA can impose penalties on the employer and may ultimately suspend their ability to obtain new work permits. If your salary is consistently unpaid and you have a Labour Court case open, you may become eligible for the Flexi Permit, allowing you to work independently while the dispute resolves.
Do I need to register my children with the school directly or through the government?
For government school enrolment, the Ministry of Education requires the children’s CPR cards (which must be obtained via NPRA as dependants on your permit), birth certificates (attested), and proof of your own residence permit. Private schools have their own enrolment processes but also typically require CPR numbers. Obtain the dependant CPR cards as soon as the dependent residence permits are issued.
I am applying for the Flexi Permit rather than an employer-sponsored permit — is the first-30-days sequence different?
Yes. Instead of an employer EMS application, you go to the LMRA Expatriate Services Centre in North Sitra Industrial Area. After confirming eligibility (via LMRA website or SMS to 33 150 150), LMRA calls you to set an appointment. At the appointment, biometrics are taken, fees are paid (BHD 427 for one year or BHD 749 for two years), and you receive the Blue Card. The mandatory LMRA monthly fee (BHD 30) is then paid at Bahrain Financing Company branches. The CPR and bank account steps follow once the Blue Card is issued.
Is there any 30-day deadline I must meet after arriving or will I face a fine?
Bahrain does not publish a single 30-day registration deadline for all expatriates equivalent to some European civil registration systems. However, several time-sensitive requirements apply: the medical exam appointment is booked at the airport and has a specific date that must be honoured (reschedulable online up to 24 hours before). If your entry visa or work permit has a validity date, overstaying — even by one day — attracts fines and risks deportation. Your employer’s compliance with LMRA monthly invoices is also time-sensitive (fines from day 1 of non-payment).
