Week 1 is the crunch: zameldowanie starts the chain that unlocks your PESEL, ZUS, health cover and everything else.
Overview
The first 30 days in Poland involve a tightly sequenced set of administrative actions, each dependent on the previous step. Address registration (zameldowanie) must be completed within 30 days of arriving at a Polish address and automatically triggers a PESEL number for stays over 30 days. Your employer must register you with ZUS within 7 days of your employment start, activating NFZ health coverage. A NIP tax identification number is needed for payslips. The MOS portal (mandatory since 27 April 2026) must be used to submit any residence permit application before your current legal basis expires. From 1 January 2026, official government correspondence including permit decisions arrives via e-Doręczenia, so registering an electronic mailbox early matters. Verified against gov.pl, zus.pl, and mos.cudzoziemcy.gov.pl as of June 2026.
Week 1 — Immediate Priorities
- Zameldowanie (address registration): Visit your local municipality (gmina/urząd miejski) office within 30 days — the earlier the better. Bring your passport, residence title (visa or permit), and rental agreement or landlord confirmation. The registration is free. This triggers PESEL assignment for stays over 30 days.
- Confirm your employer has your PESEL: If you already have a PESEL (e.g., from a previous stay), provide it to your employer's HR department on day 1. Your employer must register you with ZUS within 7 calendar days of your employment start date — late registration is an employer offence.
- Arrange private health insurance bridge: NFZ public coverage does not activate until ZUS processes your registration, which can take several days after the employer's submission. Keep your travel/private insurance active for at least the first 2 weeks.
- Register for e-Doręczenia: Go to edorezenia.gov.pl (requires Profil Zaufany authentication). This is where voivodeship offices and UDSC will send official decisions from 2026 onward. Missing a decision deadline because you did not check your e-Doręczenia mailbox does not excuse a late appeal.

I arrived in Poland on a work visa — what is the single most important thing to do in the first week?

My employer says they will register me with ZUS — how do I verify this has been done?
Log in to the PUE ZUS portal (pue.zus.pl) using your Profil Zaufany account. Under 'Ubezpieczony' (Insured person) you will see your insurance history and current registration status. Your employer has 7 calendar days from your employment start date to register you. If the record shows no registration after 7 days, contact your HR department and then ZUS directly if unresolved. Failure to register you is the employer's legal offence, but you bear the practical consequences of having no NFZ coverage.
How do I access Polish public healthcare in my first month?
Once your ZUS registration is active (confirmed via PUE ZUS), you are enrolled in the National Health Fund (NFZ) and can access public healthcare free of charge at any NFZ-contracted provider. Register with a local primary care doctor (lekarz POZ) at a nearby healthcare centre — this is your gateway to specialist referrals within the public system. In an emergency, any hospital emergency department (szpitalny oddział ratunkowy, SOR) must treat you regardless of registration status. Keep private insurance active for the period before ZUS confirms your coverage.
What is Profil Zaufany and do I need it in Poland?
Profil Zaufany (Trusted Profile) is Poland's national digital identity system, used to authenticate access to government online services including the MOS portal (for residence permits), PUE ZUS, e-Doręczenia, e-PIT tax returns and e-KONSULAT. It is free to set up at pz.gov.pl using your passport or Polish ID (foreign nationals can authenticate via a bank account at participating Polish banks or in person at a ZUS or government office). Almost all administrative processes in Poland now require or strongly benefit from having a Profil Zaufany account.
Do I need to convert my driving licence to a Polish one in the first 30 days?
EU/EEA driving licences are fully valid in Poland without any conversion or time limit. If you hold a non-EU licence, validity and conversion rules depend on your licence's issuing country. Licences from countries party to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic are generally accepted for driving in Poland, but permanent residents may need to convert after 6 months. Conversion applications are handled by the local starostwo (county administration) office. If in doubt, contact the relevant starostwo or check the MSWiA guidance on driving licences for foreigners.
I missed the 30-day zameldowanie deadline — is it too late?
No — you can still register at any time, and doing so remains strongly recommended. While a minor administrative penalty can technically apply for late registration, authorities focus far more on the practical consequence: without zameldowanie you cannot get PESEL, which blocks ZUS, NFZ, bank accounts and residence permit processing. Visit your local municipality office with your passport and any proof of your address (rental agreement, utility bill, landlord letter) and register immediately. The process is free and typically completed on the same day.
