Spain's language requirements are concentrated at citizenship — there's no formal language test required for initial residence (NLV, DNV), C permit (long-term residence), or work permits. For citizenship by naturalisation, applicants must pass two tests administered by the Instituto Cervantes: DELE A2 (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) testing Spanish-language ability at A2 (CEFR) level, and CCSE (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España) testing knowledge of Spanish constitution, history, geography, and culture. Exemptions exist for citizens of Spanish-speaking countries (DELE exempt — language already proven), for those who completed Spanish secondary education (DELE and CCSE exempt), and for some humanitarian or vulnerable applicants. Am I exempt from DELE if I'm from a Spanish-speaking country?

Test draws from a published pool of 300 questions — memorising the pool is the efficient preparation strategy. Cervantes provides free preparatory materials on cervantes.es. Pass rate: ~85-95% for prepared candidates.
How long does it take to learn Spanish to DELE A2?
80-150 hours of structured learning from zero is typical. A2 is basic conversational level — comfortable everyday conversation about familiar topics. Resources: Aula Internacional (Difusión textbook series), Nuevo Prisma, Vente. Apps: Duolingo, Babbel, Memrise. Spanish-language schools across Spain offer DELE-specific preparation courses (EUR 200-500 for 10-15 hour course).
Where can I take DELE outside Spain?
Instituto Cervantes operates centres in 80+ countries. Major cities (London, Paris, New York, Toronto, Sydney, Singapore, Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo, Berlin, Madrid, Rome, etc.) host multiple DELE dates per year. Smaller centres offer 1-3 dates. Can I retake DELE if I fail?
Yes — retake on any subsequent test date. Each attempt requires re-paying the fee (EUR 124). DELE is differentiated by skill — if you pass some sections but fail others, you'd have to retake the whole test in subsequent attempts. The certificate is valid indefinitely once issued. Pass rate for prepared candidates is high; most fails are from inadequate preparation or test-day nerves.
Can my Spanish citizenship test certificates expire?
DELE and CCSE certificates have no expiry — valid indefinitely once issued. However, the citizenship application overall has its own timing rules: you must apply for citizenship within a reasonable time of meeting the residence requirement, and the application itself has its own processing timeline. If you took DELE/CCSE many years before applying, no problem — the certificates still count.
